Sponsored by Post 550, Liam Carroll of Minneapolis won the 10th District Oratorical Contest and competed in the State Oratorical Contest in Anoka Feb. 28. He didn’t make the final four, but judges were impressed with the Jefferson High sophomore.
Bloomington Post 550 was recognized at the Appreciation Rally for achieving 100 percent membership. It was the first time in 16 years Post 550 has grown instead of declined. In the 10th District, Golden Valley and Waverly also were recognized.
Post 550 Gambling Manager Tim Engstrom, right, and Claremont Chamber Director Dean Schuette testified March 17 before the House Commerce Committee on increasing the bet limitation on paddlewheel tickets from $2 to $5 and prize awards from $70 value to $200. The post’s paddlewheel was part of the hearing.
Post 550 donated $5,000 to the Bloomington Kennedy Activities Foundation in December and another $5,000 in January, in addition to the money they raise conducting bingo on Monday nights at the Sports Page. BKAF in all receives above $30,000 a year from Post 550 for local youth activities.
Navy Reserve Center Minneapolis Commander Chris Schmid decorates American Legion Post 550 Commander Blaine Beste with a Civilian Service Award on March 14. Schmid also is Post 550’s 2nd vice commander.
It was an honor for Earl C. Hill Post 550 to host the 2026 Department of Minnesota Appreciation Rally on March 14. It might have been the first time Post 550 hosted a department event since it was host of conventions back in the early 2000s.
